Model-Agnostic AI: Why Locking Into One LLM Provider Is a Business Risk
Model-agnostic AI means your applications, agents, and workflows do not depend on any single LLM provider. The same assistant can run on one frontier model today and a different one tomorrow, based on cost, latency, accuracy, privacy requirements, or availability. The model becomes a configurable component, not a structural dependency.
The risks of single-provider lock-in are no longer hypothetical. Pricing changes, rate limits, regional restrictions, deprecations, quality regressions after silent updates, and outages have all affected teams that treated one API as permanent infrastructure. You need task-level benchmarks drawn from your real workload, run automatically against candidate models, with scoring that reflects what your business actually cares about: correctness, refusal behavior, latency, and cost per completed task. Without evaluation, every model change is a leap of faith; with it, switching becomes routine maintenance.
Routing completes the picture. Once multiple models are interchangeable behind evaluation, a routing layer can send each task to the cheapest model that meets its quality bar: a small fast model for classification and extraction, a larger model for planning and synthesis, a self-hosted model wherever data cannot leave your environment.
